PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Jim De La Vergne – CIGC
President |
INSIDE THIS ISSUE |

The Cherry Island Golf Club had another very successful year. We were able to have all of our tournaments, a great Christmas party, and we still are in great financial shape. We had the lowest amount of complaints from our members and directors than in the past years. I would like to think that it was because we did a better job this past year. In 2010 we are going to do our best to make the club even more enjoyable. I will be arranging an away golf tournament in the Spring. If the club has a good response, we will schedule another away tournament in the fall. One of our objectives is to increase weekend tournament play. Please sign up and join us on the weekends, with our new reduced rates. We will miss the stellar leadership of our past President, Frank McGrath, who in my opinion was the best President the Cherry |
Island Golf Club has ever had. I promise to work hard and keep the club heading in the right direction. I would also like to acknowledge Janice Calandri for the many years of her hard work as our midweek tournament director. She ran a tight ship and we will miss her. She will be our new Member-at-Large board member, so she will still be with our club. Ron Stimson is our new midweek tournament director. Also new for 2010, look for our Cherry Island Bar and
Grill specials that are only for our members.
Present your membership card and receive 15% off all grill items and
Happy Hour prices on all draft beer, well drinks, and house wines through Best wishes to all of you for a wonderful 2010. Get out and support your club. |

MIDWEEK
TOURNAMENT NEWS BY
RON STIMSON |
WEEKEND
TOURNAMENT NEWS BY BOB FRIEND |
|
I wish to take this time to thank all of you for supporting midweek tournaments. I have enjoyed the challenge of trying to keep all players happy. But since I find I can no longer meet the physical challenge of these monthly tournaments, I feel it is time to step down. Janice Calandri, Mid-Week Tournament Director (Retired) I would like to welcome all Cherry Island Golf Club members, both new and returning to another great year here at Cherry Island. First of all, I would like to thank my predecessor Janice Calandri for all her years of hard work. Next I believe the current format of play for the midweek tournaments is great. I am of the belief that if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it. I trust this will be another great year and hope all of you will partake in the fun and enjoyment of our midweek tournaments. See you on the course soon. |
Well it looks like 2009 is a
wrap and it was a dry one for all tournaments. For 2010 my goal is to increase play and I
can use some help. Please let me know
what type of tournaments turn you on, formats or whatever. I have been informed that we will have some
more of our ladies joining us in 2010.
Thanks. We are still working on
the start times, especially for next summer.

HOLE-IN-ONE ALERT!!! |
TIPS
FROM THE PRO BY
DAN CONDIE |
|
CIGC Member Rick Kosek took a wet hole-in-one. During the December 12th winter storm, he eagled Hole #17!!! CONGRATULATIONS RICK! |
The next time you find yourself in a bunker with your ball buried in the sand, close or shut your club face, pick the club straight up on your backswing, and straight down into the sand with some force. Do not follow through. This should pop your ball right out of the trap every time. Good Luck! |

SUPERINTENDENT’S
WORDS BY
CURTIS WOLFORD |
|
|
Here we are in the winter season. Hopefully everyone is staying warm. This time of year when we have the daily frost delays are when we get lots of little detail jobs done. This time of year is when we also get a chance to catch our breath a little and slow down. Our growing season, April 1st through October 31st, can be a little hectic for us. With having a very small maintenance crew and a large property of 130 acres of turf, we sometimes are going full speed. Since we were awarded the
maintenance contract in 2006, hopefully you have all noticed how the course
has changed. When you see us working
and moving all the time that is because we have some lofty goals for this
course. Achieving those goals is part
of the reason the course has changed so much.
I would like Some of the projects we are
currently working on right now are the following; Audubon International Certification, edging
cart paths, leveling sprinkler heads, trimming trees, creating new native
areas, installing new nesting boxes, and of course mowing the turf. |
The Audubon Project has been very successful at this golf course. There are several categories that we must complete to get certification: Site Assessment, Habitat Management, Chemical Use Reduction, Water Conservation, Water Quality, Outreach and Education. We currently have completed 4 and will finish the rest very soon. This project is very helpful because it not only helps us to enhance the environment around the golf course and by following its guidelines, it helps control our expenses. Hopefully, you will see some of the different species of birds that we have flying all over the place. If you ever have questions about what we are doing or what a bird is, please stop and ask. Other projects which are very important to the maintenance and improvement of the golf course include trimming trees and leveling sprinkler heads which make managing and maintaining the course easier for us in the long run. Some of the future projects that we are looking to complete next spring, if funds are available, are leveling off some of our worst tee boxes - # 10 & #4. I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday. I also look forward to seeing everyone enjoying the golf course if the weather cooperates with us. |

TREASURER’S
REPORT BY
RICHARD JENSEN |
|
|
To date, CIGC has 167 members for 2010. The club is solvent with about $4,000 in cash reserves after Christmas party expenditures. As the Treasurer, my goal is to ensure that the CIGC remains in good fiscal standing. The Board established a policy to maintain a cash account balance at no less than $2,000. Some of the requirements are an annual audit of the |
CIGC books and preparation of tax returns for the year ending 2009. That audit will be performed by our outside auditor in the next few months and the results will be made available at a quarterly club meeting. I also maintain the CIGC website, so if you have any suggestions for improvement or other changes, please let me know. Thanks… |
