PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Jim De La Vergne – CIGC President

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

2012 is here, and the board of directors for the Cherry Island Golf Club and I are planning on making it the best year ever at Cherry Island.  Each year we try to improve our club and we love to get all the input from the membership as we can.

Last year was successful, as we were able to play all of our scheduled tournaments, plus two away tournaments.  Our CIGC tournament handicap system is starting to level out the playing field for all.  As we play more postable tournaments, it will only get better and better.

With the economy downturn in our area, membership at all of the Sacramento golf courses is down, including ours.

But we are doing our best to recruit new members and keep the ones we have now.  So, tell all your friends to join our club.

The golf course is in terrific shape, and this spring, when the new number 10 hole is ready for playing, it will be even better.

In closing, have a great holiday season and a Happy New Year.  Keep it on the fairway.

MIDWEEK TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR

BY RUSS ENYART

Greetings to all!  My name is Russ Enyart and I’ve taken over the job as Midweek Tournament Director from Jim Biles.  I’ve made some people happy in my life but no one has ever seemed quite as happy as Jim did when I said I’d give this tournament director job a try.

I do want to thank Jim for his assistance during the transition.  His knowledge of the computer program that’s used for tournament play is remarkable.  Trying to teach it to me was less than remarkable, a result of my limited computer skills, not his teaching ability.

Working with Jim I’ve learned that the job of tournament director is more than collecting scorecards at the end of tournament play.  Like most of you, I’d show up on tournament Wednesday, get my score card and play golf.  The fact that I had a tee time, my name and tournament handicap were on my score card,

In a way, I feel like Little Mikey on those long ago TV commercials for Life Cereal.  You remember, “Give it to Mikey, he hates everything.”  And then, “He likes it.”  Well time will tell if “I like it.”

rules were printed, closest to pin was indicated, flights were posted, and then the final results were on the Website a couple of days later just seemed to happen.  But, as I’ve learned, it happens because the tournament director has done his/her job well.

With that in mind, the first couple of midweek tournaments this year may not run like clockwork but, with Jim’s help, I’ll keep learning the system.  Bear with me.  Also, your input is welcome.  If you have some constructive ideas let me know.  I look forward to seeing you at our first 2012 Midweek Tournament.

TIPS FROM THE PRO

BY DAN CONDIE

As you know, winter is now here.  So it’s time to adjust your golf game to cold weather conditions.  If you want to improve your winter golf, you must first stretch and warm your muscles up before you play golf.  You can do

this by taking lots of practice swings or just by stretching.  You have to understand that the golf ball doesn’t go as far in the cold so aim for the back of the green.  This will help you hit more greens and lower your score.

WEEKEND TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR

BY BILL MILLAR

We want to thank all the Members/Players for their support and participation in the Weekend Tournaments in 2011.  I went through some growing and learning of the systems of running a tournament.  The player count for Weekend Tournaments is up and we want to grow the Player Count even more in 2012.  I want to thank Jim Biles for helping me with learning systems of Setting and Running Tournaments, and Andy Clark for Handicapping the tournaments. In 2012 we will try and get three types of Stroke Play Events a quarter with one type of Fun Event a quarter and also the Buddy Tournament in May.

For 2012 we have done some changing of Tournament Formats.  See the 2012 Tournament Schedule on page 2. We are working on having it as a ShotGun start so all players begin at the same time and end at the same time, with additional fun challenges on the course, and getting the CIGC to approve more $$$$ for food and drinks.  We are looking forward to a great 2012 with more players so we can pay out larger $$$$ to the winner.  If you have any suggestions please contact me by phone (916-770-0045) or email wmillar45@gmail.com.

SUPERINTENDENT’S WORDS

BY KURTIS WOLFORD

Here we are in the winter season.  Where is the rain?  I have never had to irrigate this many times in December before because of the lack of rain.  Hopefully everyone is staying warm.  This time of year when we have our daily frost delays it is a challenge to keep warm for us maintenance guys.  We do lots of little detail jobs when we can’t get on the turf.  This time of year is when we also get a chance to catch our breath a little and slow down.  Our growing season, which is April 1st – October 31st, can be a little hectic for us.  We have a very small maintenance crew and a large property--130 acres of turf.  When you see us working and moving all the time that is because we have some lofty goals for this course.  Achieving those goals is part of the reason the course has changed so much.  I would like Cherry Island to be known as the best conditioned municipal golf course in the Sacramento valley.  We always want to move forward and improve the facility; we never want to revert to how the course used to be.  All this will only happen by hard work.

Some of the projects we are currently working on right now are the following; Audubon International Recertification, edging cart paths, leveling sprinkler heads, trimming trees, creating new native areas, installing new nesting boxes, and, of course, mowing turf.  Our Audubon Recertification Project has been very successful on this golf course.  Recertification is a 2 year cycle for making improvements to the course environment based on established goals. This project is very helpful because it helps us enhance the environment around the golf course.  By following its guidelines it helps us control our expenses.  Hopefully you have seen some of the many different species of birds that we have flying around the course.  If you ever have questions about what we are doing or what species a bird is please stop me and ask.  Thank you to board members and club members who volunteered their time to help clean out and install new nesting boxes around the course.  All of the other projects that we have going are very important to the maintenance and improvement of the golf course.  The more things we do like trimming trees and leveling sprinkler heads actually make managing and maintaining the course easier for us in the long run.

All of you are wondering what is going on with the new #10 green.  Well it’s been growing very slowly.  About 85% of it is ready, it’s just the right side and front right of the green that is not ready.  One reason for the delay is the amount of sunlight it is receiving.  Every plant needs a certain amount of light to grow.  I chose to trim the two existing Blue Oak trees too late in the season, not giving the green adequate light to keep growing.  In addition, all the frost we are having has lowered soil temperatures so low that the grass grows very, very slowly.  Another issue that we are addressing is call Root Knot Nematode.  This is a microscopic worm that will feed on organic matter and roots in a soil profile.  Since the greens soil is brand new it has not yet developed organic matter for the nematodes to feed on so the only food source is the turf roots.  We have been treating this issue and it will be resolved soon!

You might also notice the white blanket that we put on the green.  It is called a germination blanket.  It actually helps warm the soil temperature by up to 4 – 10 degrees while letting light and water go through that blanket.  Hopefully the green will be ready this spring when things start growing again.  I would like to wish everyone a safe and merry holiday season and look forward to seeing you on the course in 2012.

WORDS FROM THE HANDICAPPER

ANDY CLARK

I would like to welcome all the new members to the club.

In January we’ll be starting our 2nd year of the Cherry Island Golf Club handicap program.  For those of you who are new, the Cherry Island Golf Club handicap is derived from the lowest 5 of the most recent CIGC tournament scores.  We then use the CIGC handicap or the NCGA handicap, whichever is the lowest, for our tournaments.  You must play in a minimum of 4 Cherry Island Golf Club tournaments to establish a CIGC handicap.

Again, for new members who are unfamiliar with posting scores (to the computer located in the Pro Shop) to establish a handicap, please do not hesitate to contact me at (916) 987-1709 or any board member with questions regarding posting of scores.

If anyone has questions or concerns regarding their handicap, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Looking forward to a great year in 2012.
