INSIDE THIS ISSUE

It’s hard to believe that 2010 is already half over.  Even with the unusual weather we have been experiencing, we have had good turnouts for our tournaments.  So come on out and join in the fun.  Our annual away tournament at Apple Mountain Golf Course was a success, but our last three groups did get a little wet as it started to rain.  The staff at Apple Mountain GC even gave us all a nice lunch when we got in.

Results for the tournament are:

       Craig Houghton

2nd  Ron Pang

       Rodney Tucker

REMINDERS FROM THE HANDICAPPER

BRUCE CRAIGHTON

Since the Midweek Tournament Chairman discussed pace of play that is a factor in pairings, a recent article in the NCGA GOLF Magazine for the Summer of 2009 discussed this issue

Here are some tips that will make our tournaments go smoother:

HIT WHEN YOU ARE READY:  Sometimes the gap between shots is glacial.  It’s like golfers are afraid of appearing impolite if they jump in and hit.  If you are ready, get in there and go.

AFTER PLAYING A SHOT JUMP IN THE CART AND MOVE ON:   Switch clubs after you stop.  And please, fill in your scorecard AFTER moving forward.  Don’t make the group behind you watch your shots AND then fill in your scorecard.

PLAY A SET OF TEES THAT FITS YOUR GAME:  Many golfers have an inflated view of their distance, playing too long of yardage for their ability.  Even it the length seems fine, often playing the back tees will still introduce forced carries that you might not be able to handle.

SUPERINTENDENT’S WORDS

BY KURTIS WOLFORD

Well here we are and it’s the beginning of summer and the hot days of summer will be here before we know it.  It has been a really interesting spring.  Wet, wet, wet, and wet.  With all this wet weather it has really gotten in our way in getting things done around the course.  I have always planned for the 4th of July weekend as the start of the real heat.  For the maintenance staff it is all hands on deck working to keep things green.  Survival mode!

This year 2010 we are more prepared for the summer that ever before.  We have made some significant improvements to our irrigation system.  All of our greens and most of our fairways all have the same type of sprinkler heads.  Gone are the days of having a Heinz 57 of different sprinklers.  We are able to have a uniform distribution of water to about 80% playable surfaces.  When we took over management of the course 1 million gallons was used for a typical irrigation cycle in the summer.  We have cut that down to the 600k ranges.  That is an unheard of number with the amount of irrigated turf we have.  Being able to accomplish this has been possible by all the improvements that have taken place.  It is a cumulative effect with all the improvements.  If we improve the distribution of water we have more consistent turf conditions and we pump less water.  If we pump less water we save on electricity cost.  If we pump less water we have a dryer more playable golf course.

We are still working on fairway and rough Aerification.  We have 4 holes left.  The process that we are using and the aggressiveness that we are taking at punching holes is already paying huge dividends for us.  The project will only make us have better fairways and roughs in the future.  We are

modifying our soil structure and giving a place for water to go. Punching all those holes will help the grass chase the irrigation water down ultimately giving us deeper roots.  The deeper roots we have the healthier turf we have.  And the deeper roots we have the better grass we have, the larger storage tank the turf has for water and nutrients.  Everything we do on the course is by design.  I am looking at accomplishing something that will help produce healthier turf and or improve the golf course.

Some new things that we are working on are is the new championship tee on #5 behind #4 green that will add some length to the hole and will make it into a 3 shot par 5.  I have wanted to do that project for a long time.  I see too many eagles on that hole.  A new extension of #15 blue tee will lengthen the tee by 15 yards.  We are in the process of growing in a new turf area that will be utilized for teaching clinics on putting and short game up to 70 yards.  This area also is our expanded sod farm for some up coming tee leveling projects.  Most of you will notice all of the new trees planted around the course.  This was accomplished by working with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and local volunteers.  These plantings should really help define the golf course in the future.

When you are out on the golf course please be cautious and safe. Give other players and maintenance employees a chance to finish the shot or project.  No one should ever get hit by a golf ball.  It really hurts.

We look forward to seeing you out enjoying the course.  Hit those drives straight and please remember to fix your ball marks.  Stay cool out there this summer!

MIDWEEK TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR

Summer has finally arrived and great golf weather is upon us.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your help in the last three months.  Maybe you’re just taking it easy on me because I’m the new guy.  Whatever it is. THANKS!!!

Several members have asked questions concerning tee times and pairings.  When you fill out a tournament entry form, please indicate your PREFERENCE for early, mid or

Late tee times.  I will try to schedule tee times and pairings accordingly.  However, there are other considerations such as available times, pace of play and handicaps.  Place of play is a major consideration and is a situation which will need to be addressed at the next membership meeting.

Thanks again for you help and support, I need it!!!

CHIPPING WITH A HYBRID

The annual CIGC Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, December 4th, 2010. Please reserve the date for this fun celebration.

The next time you are faced with a long chip shot, try putting with your 3 hybrid.  This will get the ball rolling over the fringe of the green.  Make sure you use your putting stroke.  If you practice this shot, you could save 2 to 3 strokes a round.  Remember, practice this first.  Good Luck!
